The Minority in parliament earlier today Wednesday March 15 at a presser are calling on H. E. the President to stripe off awards including the Minister for Health, Information and others cited in the Auditor General’s audit of Covid-19 funds and other undeserving awardees in order to maintain sanity of the awards.
The National Awards Scheme was instituted by the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which presents high honors to Ghanaian citizens and institutions who have distinguished themselves in service and sacrifice for maintenance and advancement of the country.
This year’s National awards scheme took place yesterday Tuesday March 14, 2023 at the Accra international conference center.
According to the minority, some 6,543 frontline health workers who actually contracted Covid-19 with some dying in their line of duties are still waiting to be paid those meagre insurance packages promised them since the year 2020.
Minority’s ranking member on the health committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh who addressed the press said the health minister who was not so long ago investigated over the procurement of Sputnik V was awarded, which he is undeserving.
“Again, information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah cited in the Auditor General’s report was also given an undeserving award. Not forgetting Frontiers Healthcare Service Limited, a company whose ownership is opaque.”
However, he was of the view that the purpose for which the awards was given since its inception should have captured those frontline health workers who gave their all during the fight against COVID-19.
The Sefwi Juaboso legislator called on President Akuffo Addo to “stripe off the awards of the Minister for Health, Information and others cited in the Auditor General’s audit of Covid-19 funds and other undeserving awardees in order to maintain sanity of the awards.”
