Members of Parliament representing the people of Afram Plains in the Eastern region have expressed worry by the decision of President Akuffo Addo to divert a US$ 98 million approved loan meant for the construction of a bridge from Ekyi-Amanfrom and Donkorkrom to rather construct a by- passe on Accra - Kumasi highway.
In a joint press briefing by the MPs for Afram Plains North and South Hon. Betty Nana Efua Krosbi Mensah and Hon. Joseph Appiah Boateng, said they have cited a letter from the Ministry of Roads and Highway and the Ministry of Finance signed by the secretary to the president, Mr Asante Bediatuo is calling on parliament to suspend plans for the construction of the roads despite an initial agreement approved by Parliament.
According to them, government is making arrangements to divert approved funds for the construction of a bridge from Ekyi- Amanfrom and rehabilitation of Ekyi- Donkorkrom roads to rather construct a by-passes on the Accra- Kumasi road from Osino to Konongo which they described as politically motivated.
This decision by the government they lamented will deprive the people of Afram plains of their share of the national cake and also worsen their living conditions as a result of the deplorable state of the roads.
The MPs asked, "Mr. President, what happened to all those priorities to bring the road to Afram Plains", whiles publicly condemning this unfortunate and politically motivated decision as it will deprive their people of better living conditions.
They lamented further that government since its inception in 2017 has clearly and in many cases shown its bias against the good people of Afram Plains, recalling how the previous Mahama government had made an arrangement with legal backing for the construction of a University Of Environment And Sustainable Development (USED) campus in Donkorkrom which was hijacked and taken to Bunso the hometown of the President.
