The Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Assenso Boakye, has assured Ghanaians that the government of Ghana has put in place measures in preventing perennial flooding across the length and breadth of the country ahead of the rains.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, the minister said government has over the years realized the negative effect of flood on Ghanaians and would do all it can to arrest the situation.
The conference was meant to inform the general public about measures put in place by the government when it comes to the prevention of flooding this year and beyond.
He disclosed that the issue of perennial flooding cannot be addressed without collaborative efforts between community members and the government.
According to the minister, human activities go a long way to undermine government’s efforts in addressing flooding in the country and called for a habitual change among the Ghanaian populace.
“It is important that citizens support government interventions in preventing floods by abiding by laid down rules and regulations by authorities,” Mr. Boakye stated.
The minister charged Ghanaians especially those in the cities to stop using the drains as channel of passage for solid waste and other fecal matter.
He further disclosed that his ministry is in consultation with the National Security Services to deal with offenders of rules and regulations meant to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
The Minister who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Region also urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’s) to continue with the demolishing of structures on water ways across the country.
“I want to say on authority that any person who would be found guilty of involving in acts that will cause flood shall be dealt with in accordance with the law of the country” he stated.
