The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and former minority leader, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has urged Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to work independently and administer justice without interference from political elites when approved as Chief Justice.
Taking his turn on Parliament’s debate on the approval of the Chief Justice nominee, Mr. Haruna congratulated Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and added that, she deserves her role in the Supreme Court per her previous roles in her career.
The Tamale South MP also admonished the Supreme Court to speed up processes when ruling on certain cases to clear the backlog of cases to be dealt with.
Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo is set to become Ghana’s 15th chief justice following the retirement of Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah after serving for three years.
Justice Torkornoo will be the third woman to serve in the high office, following in the steps of Georgina Theodora Wood (2007 – 2017) and Sophia Akuffo (2017 – 2019) when she gets parliamentary approval.
