President Akufo-Addo has urged justices of the Supreme Court and other members of the bar to cooperate with the new Chief Justice to promote the rule of law in the country.
The new Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Essaba Sackey Torkornoo becomes the fifteenth Chief Justice and the third female to head the Apex Court of the land was sworn in today, June 12, 2023, at the Jubilee House.
“To her colleagues on the bench, to members of the bar, I urge your continued solidarity and cooperation with the new Chief Justice to promote the rule of law”, the President said.
Addressing other dignitaries and the newly sworn-in Chief Justice, President Akufo-Addo said he is confident Justice Gertrude Torkornoo would perform her duty as mandated by the constitution.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo takes over from Justice Anin Yeboah who went on mandatory retirement some weeks ago.
She is expected to head the Supreme Court for at least 9 years before her retirement.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo hails from Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. She attended Wesley Girls’ High School where she obtained her ordinary level certificate and Achimota School for her advanced level certificate.
She is an alumnus of the University of Ghana and graduated from the Ghana School of Law in 1986.
In 2001, she obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law and Organization from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), part of Erasmus University in the Netherlands. In 2011, she graduated from Golden Gate University, USA with an LLM in Intellectual Property Law.
On May 2004 she was appointed a Justice of the High Court of Ghana where she worked as a High Court judge until October 2012 and was elevated to the Court of Appeal.
