James Gyakye Quayson has been re-elected the Member of Parliament for Assin North in Tuesday’s by-election.
Three candidates competed for the MP position in the Assin North constituency. The candidates were James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
Mr Quayson garnered 17,245 votes representing 57.56% to beat his closest contender Mr Opoku of the NPP who amassed 12,630 votes representing 42.15%
The LPG’s Sefanu garnered a paltry 87 votes representing 0.29%.
The previous election held in 2020 was declared null and void by the Supreme Court due to James Gyakye Quayson, the winning candidate from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), holding dual citizenship when he filed his nomination forms.
Consequently, the court instructed Parliament to remove Mr. Quayson's name from its records, resulting in the vacancy of the parliamentary seat.
The Electoral Commission (EC) promptly scheduled the by-election to fill the vacant parliamentary seat for today, Tuesday, June 27.
