The Head of Media Relations Directorate of Parliament, Mr David Sabastian Damoah says the introduction of Ghanaian languages into the Parliamentary proceedings was a novelty from the Speaker, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.
Parliament is to begin the use of local languages on the floor of the House to promote the Ghanaian culture and prevent it from becoming extinct.
Order 63 of the new Standing Orders states that a Member of Parliament (MP) may use any of the local languages subject to interpretation and translation to the understanding of all.
That is expected to take off during the second meeting of the fourth session of the Eighth Parliament. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, said the necessary facilities were to be put in place including translators and the appropriate gadgets for a smooth take-off. So, barring any hitches, the new measure will take off after the Easter break.
The Head of Media Relations Directorate of Parliament, David Sabastian Damoah speaking to SOMPA NEWS said the move was because of the Speaker’s resolve to bring changes to the House since this has been there all this while.
He assured that the move would support some of the Members of Parliament who were not fluent into their respective local languages adding that the future aspirants would come into the reality that once lack of understanding of the English Language would ever be a hindrance.
