The Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Election 2024 Parliamentary Candidate in the Berekum West constituency of the Bono Region has condemned an alleged violent disruption of a live coverage of a community manifesto event at Jinjini, the constituency capital.
"The Member of Parliament and the leadership of the Berekum West New Patriotic Party (NPP) violently disrupting the live coverage of a scheduled TV3 Community Manifesto in Jinijini on Wednesday, October 16, 2024", a statement issued and signed by Mr Dickson Kyere-Duah, the NDC's Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency alleged.
A copy of the statement made available to Sompa FM in Sunyani, described the incident as unacceptable and a behaviour that undermined the principles of democracy, freedom of the press, and the "right of our constituents to be informed and heard".
"The violent disruption of Berekum West TV3 Community Manifesto, which sought to engage our constituents to directly communicate their concerns, suggestions, and aspirations to their elected representatives, is an attack not only on the press but on the entire democratic process", it added.
"Such actions by the MP and the officials of the ruling party constitute a grave insult to the rights of citizens and media institutions. Violence has no place in our politics, and leaders who resort to such tactics demonstrate a lack of respect for the people they are supposed to serve".
"The people of Berekum West deserve a representative who is committed to peaceful dialogue, constructive engagement, and the protection of democratic rights, not one who silences debate through intimidation and aggression", the statement indicated.
