Mr. Yaw Dabie Appiah, the former regional organizer for the Bono region of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his views on the party's disappointing performance in the recent elections, attributing the NPP's defeat to President Nana Akufo-Addo's failure to heed the concerns of Ghanaians.
He noted that the disconnection between President Akufo-Addo and his own party leadership, parliamentarians and Ghanaians contributed significantly to voter apathy and ultimately led to the tragic loss of power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking to the media in Sunyani he said the president failed to listen to wise counsel from Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, who emphasized that Ghanaians often vote based on their immediate needs, particularly hunger and Ignoring such wisdom, he argues that President Akufo-Addo has alienated not only voters but also key figures within his own party.
The former organizer contended that while it may appear that the NPP lost the elections outright, it was more accurate to say they relinquished power due to widespread voter apathy. This apathy, he claims, stemmed from a lack of responsiveness from party leadership regarding pressing issues faced by ordinary citizens.
Mr. Appiah called for unity among party members at this critical juncture, he urged rank-and-file supporters of the NPP to come together and strategize effectively for future contests, particularly targeting the 2028 elections as an opportunity for reclaiming power.
The path forward will require not only reflection on past mistakes but also proactive measures aimed at rebuilding relationships with voters who felt neglected during this election cycle "he said".
