The Sugarcane Farmers Association Of Ghana have made a clarion call on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the president-elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama to commence his flagship campaign policy of 24-hour economy with defunct Komenda Sugar Factory.
The association on its plea has suggested to H.E. John Dramani Mahama on the need to heed to their call which will aid sugarcane farmers of Komenda, the Central Region and Ghana in general recoup some benefit of their work, since the outgoing NPP government has disappointed them on countless occasions on the operationalization of the Komenda Sugar Factory and the purchasing of their farm produce.
They made this statement at a press conference held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the association's head office at Kissi, a suburb of Komenda in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency in the Central Region.
Okatakyi Nana Kweku Ackon, National PRO to the association speaking at the presser observed that the next NDC government in fulfilling its 24-hour economy policy with the Komenda Sugar Factory, will cause them nothing much since the factory is already in existence and will require of them no extra fund for the construction of a new factory.
He recounted the economic benefits the decision will seize to bring to the youth of Komenda and that of sugarcane farmers of the community and Ghana as a whole, adding that the time is now for sugarcane growers in the country to have a Sugarcane Board to see to the welfare of sugarcane farmers in the country likewise that of COCOBOD.
Okatakyi Ackon again remarked that members of the association will without no hesitation vent their anger on the incoming government should they in anyway plan to import any kind of sugar for the operationalization of Komenda Sugar Factory while their cultivated sugarcane sits unpurchased.
Secretary of the association, Joshua Kingsley Mensah on the other hand, uncovered the people of Komenda to have voted massively for the NDC in the just ended 2024 general election over the NPP's unfair treatment issued to sugarcane farmers of the community in the last eight (8) years in governance.
Hence, cautioned the incoming NDC government never to toe the line of the outgoing government, else members of the association together with constituents of Komenda will waste no time in showing them the exit door when the time comes.
Other sugarcane farmers and traders also called on the incoming NDC government to do all within its might to see to the operationalization of the Komenda Sugar Factory, having bestowed hope in the incoming government to revamp operations of the factory as their financial status over the years has grown from bad to waste.
