Yam festival turns bloody at Nchiraa, leaves two dead, 14 others with gunshot wounds

Calm has returned to Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following disturbances which erupted in the area on Saturday October 3, 2026.

Police confirmed that the incident left two people dead, and 14 others, including a police officer sustained gunshot wounds.

The disturbances happened during the 2026 celebration of the annual Yam Festival of the chiefs and people of Nchiraa.

According to a statement issued and signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police administration, the incident happened around 1730 hours after the event ended.

A copy of the statement made available to Sompa FM in Sunyani indicated that the bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation of an autopsy.

Those who sustained the gunshot wounds were presently responding to treatment, the statement added.

It indicated that the incident happened when Nana Tabiri Yaw II, the Chief of Nchiraa and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace, adding that there was a gunshot.

The statement said the police had since intensified their patrols in the area, and assured the public that every effort was being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances
