Bayern Munich player, Alphonso Davies has revealed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) once approached him to play for the Black Stars, but it was too late.
Asked whether he ever had the opportunity to play for Ghana, he said no one ever reached out to him until the news of his transfer to Bayern Munich broke out, adding that his mother was even against him representing Ghana.
He also indicated that he feels he was not at first considered by Ghana because he was not well-known in football prior to his move to the German club.
“Ghana never reached out, and also my mum was like, no. I was playing like not even like the academy, they never like said they wanted me because I wasn’t a big name. I think when the news came out that I was going to Bayern, then I got a message from the Ghana Federation.
“I think it was someone on the federation he texted me on Instagram because he didn’t have my number or email. But it was too late, at that time I had already got my citizenship and already made it to play for Canada.”
The 22-year-old was born in Ghana to Liberian parents and had the option to either represent Ghana or Liberia but chose to play for Canada after obtaining his Canadian citizenship in 2017.
His first national team call-up for Canada came in 2017 and has since made 39 appearances with 13 goals.
