Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been involved in a car crash in Nigeria that reportedly claimed two lives.
According to Nigeria’s Punch newspaper, the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway at Makun in Ogun State.
The report included the vehicle’s registration number and a photograph showing Joshua seated in the back of the damaged vehicle amid shattered glass.
The 36-year-old boxer, whose parents are Nigerian, is said to have sustained minor injuries, while two other occupants died at the scene. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, who was part of the rescue effort, recounted the incident to Punch.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” Orojo said.
“There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.
“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and Joshua died on the spot,” he added.
Joshua is currently on holiday in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, where he stopped the former YouTuber in the sixth round of their bout at the Kaseya Center.
The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist is expected to return to the ring in either February or March, with a potential summer showdown with retired heavyweight Tyson Fury still being discussed.
