France’s decision to reject President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace” has triggered renewed tensions between Paris and Washington, with the US president threatening steep tariffs on French wine and champagne.
French officials announced on Monday that the country would not participate in the US-led initiative, which is aimed at coordinating reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
The move was swiftly followed by a warning from Trump, who said he could impose 200 percent tariffs on French wine exports.
While the Trump administration has presented the “Board of Peace” as part of its post-conflict strategy for Gaza, allies have raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding its structure, funding, and long-term objectives.
France’s stance adds to a broader pattern of strain between the US and its traditional partners, particularly on trade and foreign policy coordination. Any new tariffs would hit French exporters hard, given the importance of the US market.
Neither side has indicated whether talks are planned to prevent further escalation.
