Former President John Dramani Mahama says if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the 2024 general elections, the party will abolish the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy)
Majority leader in parliament and Minister for parliamentary affairs has labelled the former president, John Mahama as a dictator, the Suame member of parliament stated in a conversation on Sompa Tv that former President John Dramani Mahama will be convinced against the idea of scrapping the E-Levy if he wins power in 2024 as they did with the communication service tax in President Mills administration.
“How can he scrape off a bill that has been passed into law, unless he seeks redress from the parliament besides who is John Mahama, he’s not yet even a flagbearer for the NDC, neither is he a president, so how can he repeal the e-levy? He asked’
Speaking with Omanhene Adu Boakye on Sompa Ade Akye Abia morning show, he said “it’s not so much about empty promises and falsehood in other to seek for public sympathy, he should rather face the reality because president do not make laws, its rather the parliamentarians. How can he forgo parliament and scrape what parliament has passed into law? He asked.
He further said the NDC’s are not consistent on their stand with the e-levy, stating their view was for the government to start the process in a procedural format before they turn seek for public sympathy.
“they said the government should compromise and reduced it to 1 percent but after government negotiation with the Telcos, it still came back to 1.25 percent because the telcos also reduced o.25 percent to meet the government projections. They are liars, he emphasized.
He cautioned the public against Mr Mahama, “they did this in president kuffour’s time, the then minority leader, now the speaker of parliament, Bagbin once refereed to the communication service tax as “Talk Tax”, President Mills on several campaign platforms promised to scrape it off but rather increased it, they are liars. He reiterated.
Next NDC government will repeal E-Levy Act
Earlier, former President John Dramani Mahama said if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the 2024 general elections, the party will abolish the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).
According to Mahama, although the NDC is not against new taxes, the party will not condone “burdensome taxes like the E-Levy.”
Delivering an address under the theme, “Ghana at a Crossroad” on Monday (2 May), Mahama said, “We in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the E-Levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering.
“A new National Democratic Congress government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana in 2025 will repeal the E-Levy Act,” he said.
