At least four persons have been killed in renewed clashes in Bawku in the Upper East Region, the police confirmed on Tuesday.
Briefing the media on Tuesday (10 May), the Bawku municipal police commander, Superintendent Simon Akabati said five suspects, aged between 17 to 29 have been arrested in connection with the disturbances and sporadic gunshots among ethnic groups in Bawku.
“So far five persons have been arrested; Ibrahim Sawadugu, age 17, Abdulai Mbadu, 18 years, Awudu Seidu, 15 years, Abdul-Karim Alhassan, 22 years and Issah Osman, age 29. The suspects have been sent to the Upper East Regional police command in Bolgatanga where they will be put before court,” Akabati said.
Superintendent Akabati said although the township was generally calm, a few gunshots were still being recorded in suburbs which the police are following closely.
Akabati said one locally-made pistol and one BBA cartridge were retrieved during the disturbances.
