Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Awentami Paul Afoko, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, describing it as a devastating loss to Asanteman and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The passing of the Asantehemaa was announced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during a mandatory Asanteman Council meeting, attended by all paramountcies and clans.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III died on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 98.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, Mr Afoko noted that the passing of the Queen Mother comes at a difficult time for the Ashanti Kingdom, following the recent loss of two prominent chiefs and a linguist.
He described Nana Konadu Yiadom III as the Otumfuo’s only surviving sister and traditional mother, making the loss even more painful.
“I am particularly saddened by such a devastating blow to the Otumfuo,” he said.
“I have been a beneficiary of the great honour bestowed upon me by the Asantehene, when he sent a high-level representation to my late father’s funeral in Sandema in the Upper East Region this year.”
Mr Afoko joined other political leaders, business figures, clergy, traditional rulers, and citizens from all walks of life in paying tribute to the Asantehene for his leadership and service to Ghana.
“Nana Otumfuo, me ma wo due, due ne amanehunu. Due Damirifa Due,” he added, using the Akan expression of condolence and respect.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who served as Queen Mother of the Ashanti Kingdom, was revered for her wisdom, dignity, and guidance to the Asantehene and Asanteman. Her passing marks the end of an era in the traditional leadership of the Ashanti people.
