The Founder of Ama Oduma Foundation who doubles as a Female and Child Protection Advocate, Ms. Joyce Ama Oduma, has appealed on the Social Welfare Authority to draw out unique packages, designed to seek the welfare of women situated at coastal areas in the country.
She claims, women at these areas are often limited with regards to having multiple source of income, since they're overly reliant on fishing related businesses.
Ms. Oduma emphasized that these women, aside getting their daily bread from fishing, appears helpless whenever the fishing work turns to decline. An external force which often drive them to engage in all manner of activities which turns to jeopardize their future.
Thus, the call for Social Welfare to intervene with a streamlined package to help women at coastal areas to live better rather than wayward.
The soft spoken activist and philanthropist, made this assertion at the Kormantse Bentsir Okyir Afahye, celebrated over the weekend to showcase the rich cultural diversity of the people of Kormantse in the Central Region.
An event which saw the launching of her 'Ama Oduma Foundation' which aims to enhance the livelihood of women and children, particularly in Kormantse and other coastal areas in the country.
Maame Abena Serwaa Opare, the Mfanteman Municipal Head of the Social Welfare, speaking at the occasion, warned the citizenry of Kormantse against the involvement of sexual harassment and sexual engagement with underage girls. A development which is on the ascendancy at coastal areas like Kormantse, as the deed bares serious legal punishment one can ever find.
Inspector Mable Lartey, who on behalf of the Municipal Police Commander of Mfanteman, Supt. Emmanuel Kwawu delivered an address by the police force, equally beseeched traditional rulers of Kormantse to desist the practice of harmful cultural practices like the widowhood rite, trokosi system, female genital mutilation and witchcraft accusations, which turns to have immense consequences on the victims involved.
She again observed the need for traditional rulers to offer protection to such victims by providing legal aid, shelter and social support to women, children, and the elderly and also facilitate education for communities to reject such harmful practices.
