Under the 24-Hour Economy Policy, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly is set to spearhead the government's model market initiative under the 24-Hour Economy policy.
This initiative aims to transform markets across the country, providing modern trading spaces that operate around the clock to boost economic activity and job creation.
The model markets will feature, modern infrastructure such as well-designed stalls, storage facilities, and sanitation blocks, digital payment systems, and cold storage.
Others facilities includes, childcare centres, women's banks, police and fire posts, among others.
The initiative aims at boosting economic activities by extending market hours and improving infrastructure.
According to Mayor of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, the project under the model one, will address unemployment and create jobs for the youth in his metropolis.
He addressed a host of groups in the Metropolis during a Town Hall Meeting which garnered personalities like market women and men, the clergy, traditional leaders, government officials, security and others under the theme: "The 24-hour Economy Market In Cape Coast."
The initiative seeks to improve revenue for local governments through increased economic activity.
This initiative is under the government's 24hour economy agenda to strengthen Ghana's infrastructure and local economies.
Hon. George Justice Arthur speaking in a media engagement after the Town Hall Meeting uncovered that source of funding for the model market initiative will be twenty-five percent (25%) of the District Assembly's Common Fund (DACF).
He noted that the project will take about eighteen (18) months for its completion, simultaneously after the President John Dramani Mahama cuts sod to launch the initiative probably in December 2025, since the Assembly has already gotten a proposed site for the construction of its model market.
The government plans to roll out the 24-Hour model markets across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in Ghana.
