Ghana has issued a strong denunciation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as an unconstitutional seizure of power that threatens democratic governance and undermines the country’s ongoing electoral process.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Ghana “strongly and unequivocally condemns” the coup d’état carried out by elements of Guinea-Bissau’s military.
Authorities in Accra warned that the development represents a “direct assault on democratic governance” and disrupts the electoral process that followed the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November 2025.
Ghana expressed “profound concern” and “deep dissatisfaction” with what it called a brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau.
The statement noted that the military intervention has dangerously interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the release of anticipated election results scheduled for 27 November.
The Ghanaian government urged an immediate return to constitutional order and called on all actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect the democratic process.
It stressed that any electoral grievances must be resolved through lawful, transparent, and recognized mechanisms—not through force.
Accra also demanded guarantees for the safety and fundamental rights of both citizens and foreign nationals, highlighting in particular the protection of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission officials currently stationed in Guinea-Bissau.
Their secure passage, the statement said, “must be guaranteed without delay.”
Calling for calm, Ghana appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the crisis.
The government reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a regional response in line with continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
The statement concluded with Ghana’s commitment to standing with the people of Guinea-Bissau during this period of uncertainty.
