Technical Universities Senior Administrators Association (TUSAAG) on Tuesday declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting 3 December, citing a 17-month delay in the payment of a negotiated research allowance.
The group said the government had failed to honour a one-time research allowance agreed on July 10, 2024, describing the non-payment as a “blatant breach of agreement.”
The strike will halt administrative services across all 10 technical universities, disrupting admissions, examinations, finance and human resource operations.
TUSAAG said the allowance is a contractual requirement intended to support mandatory research and publication, which are essential for staff promotions.
The association said prolonged engagement with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission produced no commitments, while multiple requests to meet Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu went unanswered.
The shutdown is expected to affect institutions including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale Technical Universities, potentially derailing the academic calendar for thousands of students.
Despite the action, TUSAAG said it remains open to immediate negotiations but insisted the strike is necessary to compel government attention after months of unsuccessful dialogue.
