The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto has regrettably disclosed the university's adverse challenge regarding accommodation issues to students admitted into the institution to seek higher learning.
According to the Acting VC, the existing on campus residential facilities are unable to meet the demands of the university's radiply growing students population. A shortfall which has had a direct impact on student enrollment and accommodation outcomes.
He made this expression at the 9th and 10th session of the 58th congregation of UCC which saw the conferment of postgraduate degrees to 4,154 postgraduate students who had satisfy the university's requirement and criteria in a ceremony held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the UCC NEC auditorium.
Prof. Aheto highlighted the fact that UCC in its 2024-25 academic year, admitted over 20,000 students of which only 11,500 were able to enroll, largely due to accommodation challenges.
Adding that out of the 11,500 students that enrolled, only 6,000 could secure accommodation on campus, unveiling the fact that 5,500 students out of the institution's enrolled students resorted to hostel accommodation.
He stressed that nearly 20,000 continuing students currently depends on private hostels in surrounding communities, as the situation is further compounded by the school's postgraduate students who as well compete with undergraduate students for the limited housing facilities available and around campus. Figures which clearly illustrate the scale and emergency of UCC's accommodation challenges.
Among the 4,154 postgraduate students of UCC who were conferred various forms of degree was TERAONE MEDIA and SOMPA FM SUNYANI's Joshua Kwasi Sie who graduated with a Masters in Educational Psychology.
Speaking in an interview with Sompa TV's Eric Annan, Joshua Kwasi Sie shared a profound excitement towards his academic achievement and implored his colleague media personalities to as well seek to attain academic excellence in their field of journalism. Citing that education when pursued, positions one at a level of advanced knowledge and broadens an individual's horizon and appreciation to tackling issues.
