The Minister for Works and Housing Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adje, has expressed outrage dissatisfaction over the rampant dumping of waste into the sea, particularly in coastal communities along the ministry's sea defense project.
The Minister highlighted the devastating impact of this practice on the environment, marine life, and human health as well as the government's ongoing sea defence project.
According to him, the dumping of waste into the sea poses a significant threat to the country's ecosystem. He cited examples of pollution hotspots along the coast, where plastic waste, industrial effluent, and other hazardous materials are recklessly been dumped into the ocean.
The Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adje made this remarks during an embarked working visit to inspect the progress of sea defense projects in the Central Region.
The projects, aimed at protecting coastal communities from erosion and tidal waves, are crucial for the livelihoods of residents and the preservation of key infrastructure.
During his visit on Monday 9, 2026, the Minister inspected the ongoing sea defense project at Anomabo, Cape Coast and that of Elmina.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of work done by the contractors and urged them to hasten construction works to bring relief to the local communities.
The projects, which include the construction of breakwaters, sea walls, and drainage systems, are designed to mitigate the impact of coastal erosion and flooding. According to the Minister, the government's commitment to protecting coastal communities is unwavering, and efforts are being made to release funds to ensure the projects are completed as scheduled.
"I'm satisfied by work done and call for community adherence in stopping the act of dumping refuse into the sea."
Dr. Sylvester Darko, the Acting CEO of Ghana Hydrological Authority, shared his concerns on sand wining as a matter that need to be addressed with the urgency it deserves at areas which has sea defence project going on.
"There are some individuals in these communities who comes with trucks to extract sand along the construction site, which is affecting the project," he shared worry.
The Minister's visit demonstrates the government's commitment to protecting the lives and livelihoods of people living in coastal communities.
