The Senior Manager for Sustainability at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Dr. Stephen Adjei, has urged students to embrace integrity, resilience, and long-term thinking as essential pillars for academic and professional success.

He delivered the message during the fifth edition of the “Start Right, End Well” Mentorship Programme, held at the UMaT Main Auditorium.

Addressing students, faculty members, and mentors, Dr. Adjei emphasized that sustainability goes beyond environmental protection and resource management.

According to him, true sustainability involves investing in people and equipping them with the right values and competencies to make responsible decisions throughout their careers.

He noted that the theme “Start Right, End Well” aligns closely with sustainability principles, stressing that a strong foundation built on discipline, accountability, and ethical conduct leads to lasting success.

“Starting right means understanding that your education is not only about obtaining a degree, but also about shaping your character and developing the mindset needed to solve complex industry challenges,” he stated.

Dr. Adjei further encouraged students to remain consistent and committed throughout their academic journey, adding that ending well requires perseverance, integrity, and adherence to high ethical standards especially, in demanding fields such as mining and technology.

He also underscored the importance of mentorship in helping students navigate academic pressures and make informed career decisions, describing the programme as a valuable platform that connects experience with ambition.

The Senior Manager commended the organisers and mentors for sustaining the initiative over the years and expressed confidence that the fifth edition would further strengthen students’ preparedness for leadership roles in industry and society.
