The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed concern over the growing cases of drug abuse, sexual exploitation, and other social vices in schools, describing the situation as disturbing and harmful to students’ health and future aspirations.
According to the Asunafo North Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Samuel Laar, such behaviors are undermining the safe learning environment that schools are meant to provide for young people.
Speaking to Obaapa Nana Yaa Kaakyire of Sompa FM-Techiman in Goaso during the 69th Independence Day celebration, Mr. Laar called for stronger collaboration among parents, teachers, and communities to address the worrying trend and support affected students.
“Drug abuse and sexual exploitation in our schools are destroying not only the health of our students but also their dreams. Our schools must remain safe havens for learning and personal growth,” he stated.
Mr. Laar further highlighted other persistent challenges facing the education sector, including truancy among candidates preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), examination malpractices, and violence during school sporting activities.
He emphasized that although GES has initiated measures to address these issues, the support of parents and the wider community is crucial in shaping students’ attitudes and behavior.
“Parents and the community must anchor their voices in support of efforts to correct these attitudes and guide our students onto the right path,” he added.
Mr. Laar reaffirmed that the Ghana Education Service remains committed to educating students, strengthening reporting systems, and ensuring swift action against perpetrators of misconduct, particularly cases involving sexual exploitation in schools.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Asunafo North, Haruna Mohammed, popularly known as Haruna B.A., urged Ghanaians to promote unity and patriotism to drive national development.
He cited the recent decision by John Dramani Mahama to wear the traditional Fugu during a state visit to Zambia as a positive example of promoting Ghanaian culture, noting that the attire has since gained increased popularity and value among Ghanaians.
