The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has praised Notre Dame Girls' Senior High School for maintaining a strong record of academic integrity and steering clear of examination malpractice.
The commendation was delivered by the Bono Regional Deputy Controller of WAEC, David Kafui Abgesi, during a thanksgiving Mass and stakeholders’ engagement held at the school on Saturday, April 11.
Mr. Abgesi noted that WAEC’s core mission is to ensure that all candidates sit for examinations under fair conditions and are awarded certificates based on merit.
“Anyone who want to pass the examination and acquire certificate in any other manner which seem not to be fair, it will be considered cheating,” he stressed.
He, however, expressed concern over the rising cases of examination malpractice, particularly in the Bono and Ahafo regions.
According to him, the situation has become a major challenge, warning that persistent malpractice risks eroding the credibility of certificates issued in the affected regions.
Describing the trend as a “pressing canker” in the education system, he emphasized the need for schools and stakeholders to uphold integrity in the examination process.
“This canker has been deviled this region for so long, and because of that, our certificates that come from these regions, I would say, have lost value for certain number of years,” Mr. Abgesi noted.
Despite the broader concerns, Mr. Abgesi singled out Notre Dame Girls’ SHS for its exemplary conduct, stating that the school has, for several years, remained in WAEC’s “good books” and has not been cited for any malpractice-related offences.
“Notre Dame Girls’ SHS has not been in our books. That’s the fact,” the Bono Regional Deputy Controller for WAEC revealed.
Therefore, Mr. Abgesi encouraged other schools to emulate the institution’s commitment to discipline and ethical standards in order to restore confidence in the examination system.
