The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, The Most Rev. Prof Johnson Asamoah Gyadu, has issued a reflective and compassionate statement following a viral church exchange involving a member and a minister over tithing discussions.
In a Facebook post, the Presiding Bishop referenced Scripture, quoting John 9:39: “I came into this world for judgement, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.” He explained that this was Jesus’ response to the critical posture of the Pharisees toward Him and a blind man He had healed, drawing a parallel to the importance of humility and compassion within the Christian faith.
The statement indicated that the Methodist Church Ghana, through its appropriate leadership structures, has reached out with love and care to the member involved in the viral church exchange with a minister over tithing. Presiding Bishop further clarified that the incident is not a recent development but an earlier occurrence involving a discussion on tithing that has since resurfaced in the public space.
The Presiding Bishop commended the minister involved for showing restraint during the exchange and refraining from escalating the situation. He also expressed gratitude that the member involved has since rendered an apology.
“She is hurting by the public attacks. Mama, our love for you is unconditional. It is the gracious forgiveness of Jesus that keeps us all. Blessings,” he stated.
The message has been widely interpreted as a call for restraint, forgiveness, and pastoral sensitivity in handling internal church matters, especially when such issues surface publicly.
The Church’s response highlights its emphasis on reconciliation and spiritual maturity, urging both clergy and members to reflect the compassion central to Christian teaching.
