The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has rescued more than 600 undocumented migrants during a major intelligence-led operation targeting exploitative street begging networks in the Ashanti Region.
According to a press release issued on April 21, 2026, the operation carried out by the Ashanti Regional Command in the early hours of Tuesday focused on key hotspots in Kumasi, including Asawase, Alabar, Akwatia Line, Dagomba Line, Sabon Zongo, and Aboabo.
The exercise, which began at about 3:30 a.m., aimed at dismantling organised networks accused of exploiting vulnerable migrants for street begging.
In total, 606 individuals were rounded up, comprising 381 children, 72 females, and 153 males.
GIS indicated that many of those rescued are believed to be victims of human trafficking and forced begging, highlighting the scale of exploitation within such networks.
