The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has tasked with steering the nation’s developmental trajectory, has embarked on a comprehensive initiative to devise a consolidated, legally binding national development plan.
This ambitious undertaking is primarily aimed at addressing the long-standing and often detrimental gaps that have persisted in the areas of policy coordination and implementation across the country's diverse sectors. By recognizing these critical deficiencies, the NDPC is positioning itself to enhance the effectiveness and coherence of national strategies.
Set to be officially launched in September of this year, the forthcoming plan aspires to ensure a seamless continuity of policies throughout various political cycles, thereby mitigating the disruptions that often arise with changing administrations.
Its multifaceted focus encompasses vital areas such as infrastructure development, strategic spatial planning, and the necessary institutional reforms that are essential to cultivate sustainable and equitable growth patterns.
The overarching goal is to create alignment among local, regional, and national objectives, ensuring a unified approach to development that benefits all levels of society.
In preparation for this landmark development plan, the NDPC has already commenced a series of extensive consultations across the nation, engaging with various stakeholders at both the regional and district levels. This grassroots approach is intended to gather diverse perspectives and insights, which will be instrumental in shaping the final contours of the development plan.
During a media briefing held in Accra, the Director-General of the NDPC, Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, emphasized the critical findings revealed during these nationwide consultations.
She pointed out that numerous weaknesses have historically impeded development initiatives, leading to slow progress over the years. We prepare plans, but implementation is always the challenge,” she articulated, underscoring the urgent need for a robust implementation strategy.
Dr. Amoah further asserted that the new framework would not only prioritize the execution of plans but also incorporate stringent measures for accountability, ensuring that the objectives laid out in the development plan are effectively realized.
