The Atwima Mponua District Assembly, in collaboration with the Social Investment Fund, has cut sod for the construction of a technical training center at Otaakrom in the Ashanti Region. The project is aimed at equipping young people with practical vocational and technical skills to improve employability and reduce youth unemployment in the district.
Speaking at the ceremony, officials said the facility would provide training in areas such as carpentry, electrical work, welding, and other vocational skills that are in high demand locally. The center is expected to serve Otaakrom and neighboring communities, giving youth an opportunity to acquire hands-on skills that can support self-employment and small-scale enterprise development.

District Chief Executive Hon. Ibrahim Issahak said the initiative aligns with the assembly’s agenda to promote technical and vocational education and create sustainable livelihoods for the youth. He noted that beyond academic certificates, the training center would produce skilled individuals capable of contributing directly to the local economy and reducing dependence on white-collar jobs.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Fund, Mr. Abass Nurudeen Esq., stated that the project forms part of their broader mandate to support social and economic infrastructure that uplifts underserved communities. He revealed that four such centers are being constructed across Ghana, located in Nandom, Abetifi, Nsuatere, and Otaakrom.
Mr. Nurudeen pledged to work closely with the assembly to ensure the project meets quality standards and is completed on schedule. He added that the initiative is intended to boost vocational and technical training in the country and provide young people with the skills needed to build sustainable livelihoods.
