The National Coordinator of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSEDP), Ms. Nana Ama Mawusi Mawunyefia, has called on young people and small-scale miners across the country to actively participate in the programme’s comprehensive training initiatives aimed at promoting responsible, safe, and sustainable mining practices.
Speaking at the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) at Akyem Kotoku in the Eastern Region, Ms. Mawunyefia emphasized that the programme is designed to equip miners with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and regulatory understanding required to improve productivity while safeguarding the environment.
According to her, the training serves as a critical tool in transforming Ghana’s small-scale mining sector by empowering participants to adopt modern mining techniques, comply with industry regulations, and contribute positively to national development.
She stressed that responsible mining remains the most effective path toward preserving the country’s natural resources for future generations.
“As a responsible mining community, it is imperative that we implement regulations and best practices that safeguard our lands and protect our water bodies from the adverse effects of mining activities,” she stated.
Ms. Mawunyefia further noted that environmental stewardship must be at the center of all mining operations, adding that economic benefits from mining should not come at the expense of ecological sustainability.
The National Coordinator also appealed to traditional authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to fully support and promote the training programme within their respective communities. She explained that their involvement is essential in ensuring widespread adoption of responsible mining practices and fostering long-term socio-economic benefits.
She reiterated that the rCOMSEDP training programme is not a short-term intervention but a strategic and sustainable initiative aimed at building a skilled, responsible, and environmentally conscious mining workforce.
The programme continues to play a pivotal role in formalizing Ghana’s small-scale mining sector by providing miners with education on occupational safety, environmental protection, regulatory compliance, cooperative mining models, and sustainable resource management.
Through these efforts, rCOMSEDP seeks to create a mining industry that balances economic growth with environmental preservation, ultimately contributing to the development and prosperity of mining communities across the country.
