The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued a public warning over the activities of fraudsters who are using fake SMS messages and fraudulent online payment links to deceive unsuspecting members of the public into paying non-existent fines.
In a statement, the Authority said it had observed a growing trend of scammers sending text messages purportedly on behalf of the DVLA, claiming recipients owe fines that must be settled immediately.
The messages often contain links directing users to fake websites designed to collect payments and personal information.
According to the DVLA, the fraudsters typically create a sense of urgency by offering supposed discounts on fines or threatening penalties for delayed payment.
Once victims click on the links, they are redirected to unofficial platforms where they are prompted to make payments.
The Authority stressed that such messages are fraudulent and should be ignored.
