Lawyer Jean Williams Esq., Founder of Vivat Turkson Foundation has bemoaned the absence of a Paediatric Oncology Unit in the Central Region, describing it as a major gap in child healthcare delivery as she lost her child due to the problem.
She made this claim at the sod cutting for the construction of a Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. The unit is expected to serve children from the Central, Western, Western North
Regions battling cancer
.
“I lost my child due to cancer and I realized that Central Region lacks Paediatric Oncology Unit. That burden is too heavy for parents and too risky for sick children,” she noted.
The legal practitioner has then set a target to commission the unit within one and a half years and calls on corporate institutions, philanthropists, and the public to support the fundraising effort to make the project a reality.
Dr. Emmanuella Amoako, Paediatric Oncologist at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, assured that early detection of cancer in children is curable when treatment is accessible and timely. She said the new unit will not only save lives but also cut down the high cost of expenditure families incur when seeking care outside the region.
Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Board Chairman, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey, expressed enthusiasm about the project and confirmed that the hospital has released a site for its construction.
"We are committed to expanding specialized care for our children. This facility will bridge a critical healthcare gap in the region," he said.
Hospital officials say the unit, once completed, will reduce referral pressure on Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals while bringing specialized cancer treatment closer to home.
