The Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday witnessed the filing of nomination of candidates aspiring to contest in the ensuing Assin North by-election slated for June 27, 2023 and subsequently held a ballot to its effect.
According to the EC, four individuals as at the closing date for the filing of nomination had made their intentions known to contest in the by-election.
This includes; Charles Opoku for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), James Gyakye Quayson for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and Agatha Abaidoo who filed to contest as an Independent candidate.
Madam Christabel Okai, the Assin North Electoral Officer revealed to Sompa News' Eric Annan that the Independent candidate on Thursday morning stormed their office to tender in an official withdrawal from the competition on a personal decision.
At the end of the ballot, Charles Opoku of the NPP secured the top spot on the ballot sheet, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of LPG came second, James Gyakye Quayson of the NDC chose third as Agatha Abaidoo, the withdrawn Independent candidate picked fourth on the ballot sheet.
Charles Kojo Odoom, the NPP Central Regional Assistant Secretary affirmed that the people of Assin North in the by-election will vote massively to elect Charles Opoku following his number one spot picked on the ballot paper.
He stressed that Gyakye Quayson in comparison is no match to Charles Opoku as James Quayson is a huge gap adrift the NPP candidate in terms of achievements in the constituency, particularly in Assin Breku.
Member of Parliament for New Edubiase Constituency on the ticket of the NDC, Hon. Abdul Salam Adams said that the people of Assin North are fortunate to have a selfless candidate like James Gyakye Quayson who he earnestly believes will have the seal of God to be elected once more as MP of the constituency come 27th June.
Three (3) candidates currently appears to contest in the much anticipated Assin North by-poll.
