President John Dramani Mahama has extended his congratulations to Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on his appointment as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, while charging him to uphold the highest standards of the Judiciary.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Mahama reminded the new head of the Judiciary of the weight of responsibility he now carries, noting that his role places him “at the intersection of law, history, and service.”
He said the public’s expectations of the courts remain high, but so too is their hope in a justice system that is fair, independent and responsive to the needs of citizens.
“You must, therefore, lead with courage, even when decisions are difficult or unpopular,” the President stated, urging Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to guard “jealously the institutional integrity and independence of the Judiciary.”
Mr Mahama emphasised that judicial decisions have real consequences on the lives and futures of ordinary people, pointing out that “every file on your desk and every case in your courts represent human lives, families, and futures.”
His message comes at a time when the Judiciary has faced increased public scrutiny over concerns relating to impartiality and timely delivery of justice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie assumes office following his approval by Parliament to succeed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
His tenure places him at the helm of one of Ghana’s most critical state institutions, expected to safeguard constitutional order and maintain confidence in the rule of law.
Meanwhile, President Mahama expressed optimism that the new Chief Justice will steer the Judiciary with integrity and a renewed commitment to justice for all.
