The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Sunyani East, Vincent Antwi Agyei, has addressed growing concerns from residents of Baakoniaba regarding the non-functioning street lights and deteriorating road conditions in the community.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Poku Piesie, host of ‘Ka Masem Ma Me’ morning show at Sompa Fm-Sunyani, Friday November 28, the MCE acknowledged that none of the street lights from PWD to Baakoniaba are currently working.
He explained that the issue forms part of a larger, ongoing street-lighting project spanning New Dormaa, Barracks, Kootokrom, and the Yayima-Fokuo Police Junction.
According to him, the same contractor handling works across all these communities is responsible for the PWD–Baakoniaba stretch.
He stated that under the Secondary City Project, funds are yet to be fully released to enable the contractor to complete the remaining tasks.
“We can all testify that the contractors have already fixed up the poles and completed most of the work, leaving only finishing touches,” the MCE said.
He emphasized that once completed, the street lights will significantly enhance the beauty and safety of Sunyani at night.
Mr. Antwi Agyei further disclosed that next week Wednesday, he will join the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East, Hon. Mubarak Seid in Accra to follow up on the release of funds and push for the timely completion of the project.
Baakoniaba Road Project Receives Renewed Commitment
Addressing concerns about the poor state of roads in Baakoniaba, the MCE noted that the MP, Mubarak Seid was present during a recent sod-cutting ceremony for some project.
The ceremony saw the participation of several traditional leaders, including Nifa Hene representing the Sunyani Traditional Council, Chief of Baakoniaba and Tufo Hene for Sunyani Traditional Council as well as other Dignitaries.
The MP, Mubarak Seid assured residents of his commitment to improving the Baakoniaba road, as well as other inner city roads in Yawhima and Abesim, which form part of ongoing development efforts.
In Kootokrom, key areas such as Abinga Junction and Sesala Lane have also been listed under urban road projects the MP is advocating for.
In total, the roads under consideration amount to approximately 10 kilometres.
Mr Antwi Agyei urged residents and traditional authorities to continue having confidence in the MP’s efforts, assuring them that every necessary step is being taken to ensure the roads are constructed within the shortest possible time.
