Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has backed the party’s decision to begin processes to expel former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following comments describing the party as “fake.”
Reacting to the controversy and to remarks by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), Nana Obiri Boahen stressed that political parties, like all organised groups, operate under defined rules that members are expected to respect.
Speaking in an interview with Ama Konadu on ‘Adea Akye Abia’ morning show at Sompa FM-Sunyani, the Former Deputy General Secretary said that it is only right for the party to decide any member who wants to go against the party’s dos and dons future.
“First of all, what is a political party?” he asked. “A political party is a group of individuals who have come together with one common goal, which is to rule the country. They have their dos and don’ts.”
According to him, whether it is a political party, a social club, or a religious organisation, membership comes with obligations. “Every group has its dos and don’ts, and once you are part of them, you must respect and adhere to those rules,” he said.
Nana Obiri Boahen noted that the NPP, as a political organisation, has a responsibility to protect its image and internal cohesion. “The party says don’t disrespect it or make comments that will tarnish its identity,” he stated.
He criticised Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks, which suggested that the party had lost its authenticity and fairness. “If you are asked about your party and you say it is fake, that all the leaders are not real, that the party has collapsed and fairness no longer reigns, then that is very serious,” he said.
He further questioned the former minister’s decision to remain in the party despite such criticisms. “To an extent that you even refuse to accept a letter from the General Secretary after making these comments, and still want to remain in the party — is this normal?” he queried.
Nana Obiri Boahen argued that it was inconsistent for a member to publicly denounce the party while insisting on staying within its ranks. “How can you make such comments about your own party and still want to remain in it?” he asked.
In his view, members who fundamentally disagree with how a party is being run should take a clear decision. “If someone is no longer comfortable with the way things are run in a group they joined, they should leave after pointing out what makes the environment not conducive for them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NPP has initiated disciplinary steps against Professor Frimpong-Boateng following his comments, a move that has sparked debate within political circles about internal dissent, party discipline, and freedom of expression.
