The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Dormaa West District Assembly, Stephen Azorba Awuni, has announced significant improvements in access to potable water across the district, following the effective use of government common fund allocations.
He revealed that access to safe drinking water had previously been one of the most pressing challenges confronting residents of Dormaa West.
In a telephone interview on Friday edition of Sompa FM “Ka Masem Ma Me” morning show, hosted by Nana Poku Piesie, Mr. Awuni disclosed that the Assembly has constructed 20 boreholes, exceeding the minimum target of 10 boreholes set by the President for district assemblies nationwide.
“Due to the common fund received from government, we have been able to provide 20 boreholes, even though the President asked us to provide at least 10 for our communities,” Mr. Awuni said.
Out of the district’s 99 communities, 47 previously lacked access to potable water, forcing residents to travel long distances or depend on untreated rivers and streams for survival.
“When you come to Dormaa West, we have 99 communities, and out of these, 47 did not have access to potable water. People had to walk long distances or drink from untreated rivers,” he stated.
According to the DCE, the borehole projects have significantly improved living conditions and reduced health risks in many affected communities.
Despite the gains made in the water sector, Mr. Awuni identified poor road infrastructure as the next major development challenge facing the district.
“Our roads are the next biggest challenge we have in Dormaa West,” he added.
He assured residents that the District Assembly remains committed to addressing infrastructural challenges while continuing to implement development projects aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
