Ghana's Vice President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has re-emphasized for increased women's involvement in top government roles, as she shares the believe that should women be empowered to take on leadership positions, cites the need for fair representation and international treaties Ghana has signed onto.
The Vice President has been vocal about creating equal opportunities for women in education, enterprise development, entrepreneurship and leadership.
She also emphasized the importance of partnerships and people-centered approaches to achieve lasting change.
She made this known on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the 80th anniversary celebration and speech and prize day of Holy Child Senior High School in Cape Coast, earmarked under the theme, "80 years of developing globally, impactful women of substance."
H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang further stressed that "educating girls is a national strategy, even as we celebrate progress we must acknowledge the work that remains."
Ghana aims to meet a 30% target for women in leadership by 2026, under the Affirmative Action Act, as government works to implement policies supporting women, with initiatives like the Women’s Economic Resilience Initiative (WERI) and National Insurance School Expansion.
Madam Linda Appiah, Headmistress of Holy Child Senior High School, pointed out series of challenges confronting the school.
"We are under staffed both on teaching and non- teaching basis, whereas aging infrastructure and indiscipline acts of some students also continues to linger, as a number of students turns to use the tablets issued them for non-educational purposes at odd hours."
Meanwhile, Mayor for the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. George Justice Arthur called for an admission quota for students within his metropolis into the top Senior High Schools in the Central Region, such as Holy Child.
"It about time pupils of Cape Coast or Central Region benefits with a quota system from these top school all in Cape Coast in as much as shaping of life is concerned."
