Cameroon’s football fraternity has plunged into open division following the shock exclusion of star goalkeeper C and captain Vincent Aboubakar from the provisional squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
In an interview with Akwasi Atta Twum Barima on the Sompa FM in Sunyani's Premier Sports, Andre’, a journalist from Cameroon says a move has intensified an already volatile rift between FECAFOOT, led by Samuel Eto’o, and the Ministry of Sports, backed by several senior players.
The country’s streets, sports bars, and radio call-in shows erupted within minutes of the announcement. What should have been a routine squad reveal has transformed into a national referendum on loyalty, leadership, and the future of Cameroonian football.
A Nation Split Right Down the Middle
Across the country, two clear camps have emerged.
On one side are supporters of FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o, celebrating the exclusions as a sign that the federation is asserting its authority. For them, Eto’o represents renewal—a leader determined to shake up entrenched systems and enforce a new order inside the Indomitable Lions camp.
On the opposite side stand supporters of the Ministry of Sports, Onana, and Aboubakar, who reacted with shock and disappointment. Many view the decision as a politically motivated act that weakens the national team and disrespects two of Cameroon’s most influential players.
Several groups are now eagerly awaiting the Minister of Sports’ formal reaction, anticipating a response that could either escalate or ease the conflict.
The Heart of the Rift: Loyalty, Not Discipline
While Onana has faced disciplinary issues in previous tournaments, insiders stress that this latest conflict has nothing to do with conduct or behavior.
Instead, the dispute is widely understood to revolve around loyalty—specifically, whether players align with Eto’o’s federation or the Ministry of Sports, which has long wielded influence over team management.
According to federation sources, tensions between Onana and FECAFOOT leadership have been building for months. Aboubakar, as captain and a respected senior figure, has reportedly stood by his teammate, placing both men squarely in the Ministry’s camp.
The journalist, Andre’ reflecting on negotiations summarized the standoff succinctly: “This is no longer about rules or discipline. It’s about choosing a side.”
