Former Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he harbors no ill feelings toward Luis Suarez, recalling the dramatic 2010 World Cup quarterfinal clash between Ghana and Uruguay.
The match is remembered for Suarez’s infamous handball in the dying moments of regulation time, which stopped Dominic Adiyah’s header from entering the net. Ghana was awarded a penalty, while Suarez received a red card.
Gyan’s ensuing spot-kick hit the crossbar, and after extra time, Ghana fell 4-2 in the penalty shootout, ending their hopes of reaching the semifinals.
Speaking to Rio Ferdinand, Gyan reflected on the moment, saying: “I always say I would have done the same thing that Luis Suarez did because he did that to save his nation.
“Seeing the ball going into your net at that crucial moment, he just did that to save his nation, but then I have forgiven him,” he added.
Ghana’s 2010 campaign remains one of its most memorable, advancing to the quarterfinals from a group featuring Serbia, Australia, and Germany, and defeating the USA 2-1 after extra time in the Round of 16.
The Black Stars are set to return to the World Cup this summer, with the tournament co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Placed in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, the Black Stars are aiming for a stronger run on the North American stage.
