President John Dramani Mahama says building a strong and prosperous nation isn’t the job of government alone — it’s something that requires the effort and commitment of every Ghanaian.
He made this call during the commissioning of the Damongo Camp Prison, a 260-bed ultra-modern correctional and vocational training centre built and donated by The Church of Pentecost to the Ghana Prisons Service.
The Damongo facility, which follows similar projects in Ejura and Nsawam, aims to ease overcrowding in prisons and promote rehabilitation through skills training in areas like agriculture, carpentry, and other trades.
President Mahama described the new facility as “a symbol of hope, a centre for second chances, and a place where lives can be transformed.” He said the project shows the incredible things that can happen when government, the church, and the community work hand in hand.
He also commended the Ghana Prisons Service for its ongoing commitment to reforming and rehabilitating inmates, helping them reintegrate into society as productive citizens.
A Model Partnership Between Government and the Church
Speaking at the event, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak thanked The Church of Pentecost for its generosity and dedication to national development.
He said the collaboration between the Church and the state should serve as a model for other sectors, showing how faith-based organizations can partner with government to drive progress.
He revealed that the government has set aside ₵1 billion to upgrade security agencies and improve infrastructure within the correctional system.
Plans are also underway to introduce non-custodial sentences for minor offences, review bail conditions, and roll out a robust parole system — all part of efforts to create a fairer, more effective justice system.
The Church of Pentecost’s Commitment to Change
The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, explained that the Damongo project is part of the Church’s ongoing Safety and Security Project, aimed at supporting Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He said the Church’s mission goes beyond preaching, extending into “holistic human development” through projects that touch lives in areas like education, health, security, and water provision.
Apostle Nyamekye praised the teamwork behind the initiative, commending President Mahama and the Ministry of the Interior for their forward-thinking reforms. He assured that the Church will continue to partner with the State to promote progress and national transformation.
