The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sunyani Municipal, Vincent Antwi Agyei, has assured residents that the assembly is taking urgent steps to address the deplorable state of the municipal slaughterhouse and its surrounding environment.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Poku Piesie on ‘Ka Masem Ma Me’ morning show on Sompa FM-Sunyani on Friday, 19 December, Mr. Antwi Agyei revealed that within the next few months or by next year at the latest, the assembly will either undertake major maintenance works on the existing slaughterhouse or construct a new one, depending on how ongoing plans progress.
“I don’t want to be too emphatic, but in a few months, either we will do major maintenance work on the slaughterhouse or we will put up a new one, if things go according to plan,” he stated.
The MCE expressed concern about the poor sanitation conditions at the facility, particularly the state of a waste container and the untidy immediate environment. He disclosed that he has directed the Municipal Environmental Officer to begin work to address the situation as quickly as possible.
Mr. Antwi Agyei also used the opportunity to reflect on the challenges his administration inherited, noting that although his team has been in office for just a year, several systems and projects had deteriorated over the past eight years under the previous government.
“People may think I still want to send them back, but that is not the case. The truth is that many things went wrong in the past, and if even one or two things had been done right, we could have used the money and resources we have now for other important projects,” he said.
According to him, the assembly has been forced to revisit and fix old projects before embarking on new ones, a situation that has put additional pressure on limited resources. However, he emphasized his determination to remain focused on his mandate.
“The things I came to meet were so bad that if I start narrating them, people of Sunyani will be shocked. But I came to work, so I will stay focused. Wherever the money is, I will find it and work with my assembly to solve the problems,” he assured.
Mr. Antwi Agyei concluded by expressing optimism, noting that despite the challenges, gradual progress will be made. “With God, everything will be possible. We will do it small, small,” he said.
