The Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipal Assembly (KEEAMA) has cut the sod for the construction of a modern 24-hour economy market at Elmina, a move aimed at boosting night-time trade and creating jobs for residents.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, was performed by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ismail Zagoon Saeed, together with the Omanhene of the Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Conduah VI, market queens, and youth leaders.
Hon. Zagoon at the event uncovered to be effective cooperation between the four (4) Traditional Councils which makes the municipality, traders and the Assembly which sort to the overwhelming consent on the allocated site for the project, being the Elmina market, stressing that "it is still a burden on other MMDAs for settling on a definite site for the project" he admonished.
He said the project aligns with government’s 24hour economy policy and will transform the country into a commercial hub beyond traditional trading hours.
"This market is not just concrete and stalls. It is opportunity, security, and dignity for our traders, fishmongers, and youth," the KEEA MCE admonished.
He emphasized that the 24-hour market will provide a safer business center for traders identified for trading on specific days of the week at Elmina.
Hon. Ismail Zagoon Saeed indicated that the Assembly had initially allocated 8acres for the project, only to realize the project will demand for only 4.5 acres, making the municipality very fortunate.
According to Mr. Kwesi Frimpong, the Managing Director for Hallwort Ghana Limited, he described the project to have a good location site, having been situated at the Elmina Market with easy access to the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway.
He underscored that the facility has over 100 lockable shops, women's bank, a creche, police post, fire service post, 24-hour lighting, CCTV, washrooms, waste management bays, and a lorry terminal and set to be completed within 24 months, with the project funding sourced from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Nana Kodwo Conduah VI, Paramount Chief of the Edina Traditional Area, commended the Assembly for siting the project in Elmina but cautioned not to politicize the project.
He urged traders to cooperate during construction and avoid encroaching of the site.
