The Jospong Group of Companies has revealed that management of waste has been a major challenge for municipalities in the country.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the Integrated Recycling and Compositing Plant (IRECAP) at Goaso in the Ahafo region on Wednesday July 19, representative of the CEO of the group Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong said, no longer will waste be discarded.
Mr Lawrence Agbui said the various waste would be collected, sorted and recycled for use.
The IRECAP, according to Mr Agbui, would serve as a source of job creation, provide healthy environment, improve health, living condition and reduce air and water pollution.
“A short while ago, together with H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, we initiated this project with a symbolic groundbreaking and now we witness the completion of this 400 tones facility. Waste management is an ever growing challenge faced by municipalities, not only in Ghana but across Africa and the world”, he stated.
“Finding solutions to these problems demands a comprehensive a collaborative efforts and I’m delighted to say that we receive support from all stakeholders in bringing this project to fruition. The true value of this facility lies in its ability to transform waste from a mere burden to a resource beneficial to our communities.”
“No longer would waste be simply collected and discarded, instead it would be sorted and organic waste would be treated to provide compost for our farming communities. I take this opportunity to urge the communities to start the segregation of plastic waste from other materials as we plan to treat plastic waste separately to enhance its value and potential for export. This integrated Recycling and Compost Plant is part of a network for 16 waste recycling facilities established across Ghana in partnership with the Government of Ghana and other foreign entities.”
The IRECAP would be managed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, subsidiary of the Jospong Group of companies, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company that focuses on delivering total waste management solutions.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Asunafo South, Hon Frank Adusi-Poku expressed appreciation to the Jospong Group, the President of the Republic and the regional Minister for choosing the district as the site for the location of the plant.
He expressed optimism that the plant would help eliminate the challenge of managing waste in the district and called on all to change their attitude towards waste management.
In 2020 the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo toured the 16 regions of the country to cut sod for the construction of 16 Integrated Recycling (IRECAP) and Compost Plant across the regions of Ghana.
The plant is set up to receive, sort and recycle municipal solid waste to produce organic compost for agronomic purposes in the sub region.
In attendance at the commissioning were representative from the ministry of water and sanitation, traditional authorities, some members of the clergy, security personnel, management and staff of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, executives and members of the New Patriotic Party and the general public.
