The Ahafo regional Minister on Wednesday July 19, commissioned the Integrated Recycling and Compositing Plant (IRECAP) sited at Akrodie junction near Goaso in the Asunafo south Municipality.
In 2020 the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo toured the 16 regions of the country to cut sod for the construction of 16 Integrated Recycling (IRECAP) and Compost Plant which is in partnership with the Jospong Group across the regions of Ghana.
The plant is set up to receive, sort and recycle municipal solid waste to produce organic compost for agronomic purposes in the sub region.
Hon George Yaw Boakye during the commissioning stated that, “Indeed, this facility, the Ahafo IRECAP is being commissioned today under the Theme, “A cleaner and healthier environment for the people of the Ahafo region” is a state of the art waste management facility with the capacity to process 1,200 metric tonnes of waste per day.”
He indicated the facility comes with ancillary facilities such as washrooms, a washing bay for the trucks, a clinic, a conference hall and a lecture hall.
Hon Yaw Boakye said, the plant has the potential to create over 800 direct and indirect employment opportunities within the Ahafo region.
"This is in line with the government agenda to reduce the rate of unemployment in our communities. The government is steadfast in her quest to collaborate with the private sector in providing the needed sanitation infrastructure to appropriately manage solid waste."
He explained, landfill sites were not properly managed in the past and has led to several poor health conditions in most communities.
"The growing levels of waste generated daily requires us to find a more innovative ways of managing our waste whilst maintaining sound environmental practices." The minister called on every citizen to take up their responsibility of properly disposing off waste generated.
He said the IRECAP which is adopted by the government for the management of waste in the country will boost environmental cleanliness.
The Ahafo IRECAP would be managed by the Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company that focuss on delivering total waste management solutions.
In attendance at the commissioning were representative from the ministry of water and sanitation, representative from the Jospong Group of Companies, traditional authorities, some members of the clergy, security personnel, management and staff of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, executives and members of the New Patriotic Party and the general public.
