The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, has urged Executives and Parliamentary Candidate aspirants of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to work hard if the goal is to win the 2024 general elections.
The South Dayi MP’s comments follow results of the Tuesday 23 May 2023 by-elections in Kumawu, Ashanti Region.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate won the by-election after he polled 15,364 beating NDC’s Kwasi Amankwa who polled 3,723.
An independent candidate Kwaku Duah who was tipped to cause an upset performed below expectation garnering 2,478 votes.
Another independent candidate also known as Kwaku Duah managed a paltry 62 votes.
Reacting to the results, the South Dayi MP tweeted: “This is to confirm that at Kumawu we didn’t record 3 or 4 votes as I earlier on indicated.
“I apologise for that but the figures were still too low in places as compared to the great effort that went in.”
He added: “It means we must all work extra hard as Executives & PCs if we’re to win 2024.”

The parliamentary candidate who contested Kumawu's By-Election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) has emerged victorious in the just ended polls.
Ernest Yaw Anim polled 15,264 votes to defeat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kwasi Amankwah, and the two other Independent Candidates.
Kwesi Amankwah managed to attain 3,723 votes while Kwaku Duah (1) had 2,478 votes and the other Kwaku Duah, 62 votes.

The Electoral Commission organized the election following the passing of the Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Philip Basoah on Mach 28.
After the EC declared Ernest Yaw Anim as MP-elect of the Kumawu constituency, members and executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were captured in a video jubilating and hailing one other for the immense effort channeled into the elections.
Speaking to the MP-Elect, Ernest Yaw Anim, he maintained that the victory was a strong sign that the NPP can break the 8 in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kwasi Amankwah says he is saddened by the votes buying menace that punctured the beauty of the elections. He disclosed that as some point in time some student voters asked him pay money before they could vote for him since the NPP had already paid something to them.
The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah revealed his satisfaction with the conduct of the overall elections despite reports of vote-buying allegations involving some agents of the ruling New Patriotic Party. “We’ve gone round several polling stations and I think that so far so good. We encountered only one breach of peace but it was brought under control so I think so far so good.” He stated.
Kwaku Duah, the 1st independent candidate on the EC’ ballot paper has been arrested by the Kumawu district police. This follows an alleged physical assault he meted on someone at Woraso L/A Primary B. According to reports, he went to the polling station and after series of misunderstsnding, he slapped the victim who is an NPP polling agent
Hon. Owusu Bempah and other regional executives then came on the scene to restore peace. Hours later, the victim reported the matter to the police who nabbed Hon. Kwaku Duah whilst the coalition was ongoing.
Meanwhile, polls are almost over and counting has commenced at some of the polling stations where the NPP parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim continues to bask in a comfortable lead.
